Northamptonshire Police will be naming and shaming drink and drug drivers as part of a new campaign this Christmas. The campaign has been aimed to encourage people to think twice before getting behind the wheel after they have had a drink.

In a statement PC Dave Lee from the Safer Roads team said: “As a police officer on the roads, I have seen the devastating effects drink and drug driving can have. It takes one second to have a collision that can change your life or the life of innocent bystander and their family. A family who will then have to live for the rest of their lives knowing a loved one was killed by someone who was over the limit.”

Being found guilty of drink or drug driving can have serious consequences. If you are found guilty of driving a vehicle whilst over the legal limit you can get 6 months imprisonment, an unlimited fine or a driving ban for at least one year or if you’ve been convicted twice within ten years you will get a three year ban.

Other problems that will happen if you’re found guilty of drink driving are, car insurance costs will increase, if you’re a delivery driver then your employer will see your conviction on your licence and it is likely you will have trouble travelling to foreign countries such as the USA.

Heavier punishments are imposed if you are found guilty of death by dangerous driving and have been found to be over the limit at the time of the accident. The sentences you can get for this are, fourteen years in prison, an unlimited fine or a ban from driving for two years and you will have to have an extended driving test before your licence is returned.
