The most wonderful time of the year for many, but a time of tragedy and loss for someone each year. It can be easy to forget the threat that thieves and criminals can pose at this time of the year, but with input from members of the Northamptonshire police, we've created a list of tips to help you stay safe this Christmas.
Always be aware of how many valuables you’re carrying when out Christmas shopping. Extra cash you might be carrying, plus any presents you may have bought could make you a target for thieves around the Christmas season. Try not to carry more valuables than you may need when out and about, and make sure not to leave them on display in the car.

Never leave your bags unattended when out either, and keep valuables like a purse or wallet safely secured in an inside pocket. When considering the trip home, have a plan in mind. If you’re walking, stick to the busier, best-lit streets, and be sure of the route. Be certain the taxi is registered, if that’s how you plan on getting home.
When at home, make sure presents are not visible from doors or windows, and consider drawing your curtains when it starts to get dark. As always, be careful to lock all doors and windows overnight.
Stay aware of what you may post on social media. You might think it’s just your friends and family watching, but advertising that you’re away from the house at Christmas, or that you’ve recently purchased or received gifts, can be risky business. Likewise, carefully dispose of packaging and gift wrapping afterwards, as these can be a sign to criminals that expensive goods may be found inside the house.
When celebrating Christmas and other occasions
For many families, fireworks are a fun and exciting way to see out some of the greatest days of the year, and Christmas is no exception. But even with warnings every year these celebrations too often turn into painful injuries, especially for the young, with half of those admitted to hospital being under 18.
But with a few, simple tips, a firework party can be a safe and enjoyable occasion for everyone involved. And remember, even on Christmas, make sure you’re all finished up by 11PM.
Be sure to read the instructions on the packaging, and keep all fireworks safely out of reach of children. Make sure not to keep them near open flame either, including lit cigarettes.
When letting off a firework, remember: Light it at arm’s length and stand back, aim it well away from onlookers, and don’t return to it once the fuse is lit.
