Both Motor and pedal bikes make easy targets for thieves, it only takes a matter of seconds for such an integral part of your life to be taken away. Help protect yourself and your bike by knowing a few simple ways to stay safe and secure. We spoke to members of the Northamptonshire police for advice you could follow.

Staying secure at home

Store your motorbike or bicycle in a secure garage or shed, and keep it locked even if securely parked. Secure your bike to an immovable object, such as a U-bolt on the garage floor, or a wall mounted anchor. Store your bike away from windows where it might be visible from the outside.

Away from home

Try to park in a well-lit area where any possible thieves will be seen, and in a security camera’s field of view if possible. Parking next to SUVs or large cars may give potential thieves cover.

Always lock your bicycle when out and about, no matter how briefly you might leave it. Lock the bike to a cycle stand if available, or any immovable object, and do not leave the lock against the floor as it is easier to smash open against the ground.

Motorcycle security

There are a variety of security devices to consider when taking the safety of your bike into account.

Tracking devices can provide real-time GPS tracking of a stolen Bike, but remember, a tracker is not a deterrent to a thief on the scene. Immobilisers, or hidden switches, can help prevent or delay your bike being stolen, as they must be pressed in order to start the engine. Wi-Fi and CCTV cameras at home can allow you to monitor your bike when away from home, as well as record any incidents.

Customise your motorbike. Any identifying details will make finding and recovering a stolen bike much easier for the police, as well as deterring thieves, who are more likely to target unaltered vehicles.

Bicycle locks

Thieves who come prepared will usually bring a tool able to break only a single type of lock. Consider investing in two types of lock for your bicycle, making it much more difficult for a single criminal to steal. Stay aware that price does not necessarily equate to resistance against thieves, consider searching for products specifically tested against attacks. To do so, ask a local bike shop, or visit www.soldsecure.com

When it comes to motorbikes, try www.securedbydesign to find security products officially approved by police.
